Coach DeBolt was chosen as coach of the women’s basketball team at Contra Costa College when the program was started in 1986 and he has coached every game since. During that time span, his teams have averaged 20 wins a season, won 10 Bay Valley Conference championships, made the playoffs 17 times, advanced to the State Elite Eight four times, and played in two State Championship Games.
Nearly 100 of his players have transferred to four-year universities including USC, Arizona State, USF, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Howard, San Diego State, Cal State-Fresno and Grambling to name just a few. Most of those have also earned their bachelor’s degree.
DeBolt grew up in Richmond and attended local schools. He graduated from De Anza High School in 1972, got his associate degree in Liberal Arts from CCC in 1975, his bachelor’s degree in Journalism from San Diego State in 1977, and his master’s degree in Mass Communication from San Diego State in 1980. He lettered in basketball at both CCC and SDSU.
In 1980 he was hired to teach journalism full-time at CCC, a job he still has today.
