CCC Nursing Faculty Recieves Book of the Year Award

The American Journal of Nursing (AJN) presented the 2008 Book of the Year Award to two deserving Contra Costa College Nursing Faculties, Sandra Luz Martinez de Castillo and Maryanne Werner-McCullough.   The award was given based on their publication of "Calculating Drug Dosages: An Interactive Approach to Learning Nursing Math."

Martinez de Castillo and Wernner-McCullough designed this electronic media instructional tool as a DVD that provides an interavtive approach to teaching and learning.  Each section is short, with easily navigated modules that shows clear and detailed objectives, and includes a series of practice problems to help students apply content.  The DVD comes with a specific test module to help students become familiar with and practice the National Council Licensure Examination questions.  The packet includes an excellent student workbook along with extra practice questions that focus on safety exercises.

The newest edition of the DVD is posted online at the F.A. Davis Instructor and Student Online Resource Center.

"It was hard work, but it has paid off in the end. We are both very pleased to received the award, and we see the benefit of students using the DVD as a learning tool," says Werned-McCullough, who is also director of the Department of Nursing at Contra Costa College.

The CCC Nursing program boasts a 98% average in passing the California State Nursing license requirements.  Dedicated faculty and caring support staff contribute to the success of the nursing program.

Congratulations to Sandra Luz Martinez de Castillo and Maryanne Werner-McCollough for a job well done and for creating new and innovative ways to reach nursing students using today's technology.
